How to download the new UK Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting: Conversion Factors for 2022

As an update to my earlier articles: UK Greenhouse Gas Reporting: Conversion Factors 2021, UK Greenhouse Gas Reporting: Conversion Factors 2020 & UK Greenhouse Gas Reporting: Conversion Factors 2019, the United Kingdom Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) & the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have jointly published its latest Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Conversion Factors for 2022, which are set at Version 2.0 (as at 22 June 2022).

Applicability of the GHG Conversion Factors
These GHG emission conversion factors can be used to report on 2022 Greenhouse Gas emissions by UK-based organisations of all sizes, and for international organisations reporting on UK operations.

How to calculate GHG emissions
The tables allow GHG emissions to be calculated using the formula:

GHG emissions = activity data x emission conversion factor

Care should be taken to ensure that the correct activity data is selected, such as for natural gas where the options are: tonnes, cubic metres, kWh (Net CV) & kWh (Gross CV), & the relevant conversion factor, where the options are: Total kg CO2e per unit, kg CO2e of CO2 per unit, kg CO2e of CH4 per unit & kg CO2e of N2O per unit.

Additionally, specific tabs in the spreadsheet provide for SECR factors (SECR kWh pass & delivery vehs, SECR kWh UK electricity for EVs) as well as updates to other tabs and their conversion factors

What are the available Data Sets?
There are three sets of conversion factors, namely:

Condensed set:
This data set is the most popular version. It provides an abridged version of the full set of factors, designed to reduce the volume of information users have to navigate through to find the factors they want. It is recommended for most, and new, users of conversion factors. Download here

Full set:
This data set of factors contains all of the available factors for the selected year, and is recommended for advanced users only due to the volume of information presented. Download here

Flat file set:
This data set contains the same information as the full set, but arranged for automated processing only. This set can be downloaded here

Further information
A methodology paper explaining how the conversion factors are derived is available here and the major changes are available later here

When will the GHG conversions for 2023 be published?
Whilst, the 2022 version will always be the most relevant GHG conversion factors for the calendar year 2022, a new data set is anticipated to be published for use for GHG emissions for the calendar year 2023 around 6 June 2023.

ACTION POINTS:

  1. Review whether your business has a compliance obligation or wishes to voluntarily report on its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in the year 2022.
  2. Download the relevant data set; Condensed Set recommended for New Users or the Full Set for Advanced or Repeat Users. The link for the webpage is here
  3. Apply the relevant GHG Conversion Factors in relation to your reporting using the 2022 Data Set until 6 June 2023 at the latest
