This article looks at the celebration of the United Nation’s World Environment Day 2022 and helps to explain what World Environment Day is, why is it a special event in 2022 & what is its theme.

What is World Environment Day?
World Environment Day is the United Nations’ special flagship day for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

World Environment Day was established in 1972 & first celebrated in 1974 and takes place every year on 5 June. Each year, World Environment Day is hosted by a different country in which official celebrations take place. The host country for 2022 is Sweden.

Why is it a special event this year?
The Government of the Sweden will be hosting World Environment Day 2022 in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). This year 2022 marks 50 years since the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972, which itself was held in Stockholm, Sweden & was the conference that led to the creation of UNEP and designating 5 June every year as World Environment Day.

What is the theme for 2022?
World Environment Day 2022 will be held under the theme “Only One Earth”, to highlight the urgent need to live sustainably in harmony with nature by bringing transformative changes – through policies and our choices – for a cleaner and greener lifestyle.

Only One Earth was the motto for the 1972 Stockholm Conference; 50 years on, the motto holds true – this planet is our only home, whose finite and precious resources must safeguarded and protected by each of us.

How can it support action?
Above all, World Environment Day offers a global platform for inspiring positive change with an opportunity for:

  1. A rethink how we consume the Earth’s finite resources
  2. Businesses to develop greener models and transition to green economies
  3. Farmers and manufacturers to produce sustainably
  4. Governments to invest in repairing and protecting the environment
  5. Educators to inspire students to act, and
  6. Youth to build a greener future.

These actions will become ever more important for governments meeting at the Stockholm Conference and for our businesses and personal contributions to protect and conserve our shared environment.

So, to summarise:
