There is an app for that – The Ecolabel Guide.
This episode looks at the Ecolabels and the use of the EcoLabel Guide app to help to inform your product purchasing decisions. Stay until the end and these is a bonus resource to help you find out more about Ecolabels.
First, lets look at what is an ecolabel…
What are Ecolabels?
Ecolabels are logos, labels or marks, which are used to identify products that conform to recognized environmental standards.
Not all ecolabels are equal with three types of Ecolabel described in the relevant ISO 14020 series.
Type I Ecolabels
The most demanding ecolabelling called Type I Ecolabels covers the environmental performance over the life-cycle of the product and is delivered in accordance with ISO 14024:2018 and will have been overseen by an Accreditation Body to ISO/IEC 17065:2012.
Type II Ecolabels
Other labels, called Type II, may be self-declared without independent certification or external oversight. These environmental claims should be treated with caution as they may been “greenwashing”, where the product may be promoted on its environmental characteristics when they may not be confirmed on closer examination. ISO 14021:2016 can help to ensure that self-declared Ecolabels are not simply “greenwashing”.
Type III Ecolabels
Type III Ecolabels are Environmental Labels and Declarations (ELD) in conformity with ISO 14025:2006 & represent the environmental performance of a product based on information derived from the evaluation of life cycle of the product.
