Hazardous Waste Classification changes on 5 July 2018


You will need to be aware of new changes to the criteria for the classification of hazardous waste, which will take effect on Thursday, 5 July 2018.

Council Regulation (EU) 2017/997 of 8 June 2017 amending Annex III to Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards the hazardous property HP 14 ‘Ecotoxic’ implements three main changes for the classification of hazardous waste, namely:

  1. Changes in the criteria for Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS)
  2. The summation equations for acute and chronic aquatic hazards as well as wastes containing heavy metals, and;
  3. Changes to HP 14 ecotoxicity

ACTION POINTS

  1. Review the implications on your business of the new hazardous waste classification criteria on your current classification procedure.
  2. Revise any hazardous waste classification in relation to Ozone Depleting Substances, acute and chronic aquatic hazards as well as wastes containing heavy metals, and ecotoxicity
  3. Discuss any revised hazardous waste management issues with your waste management contractor.
