Yesterday, I attended an informative workshop with updates on RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) II and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directives hosted by BIS (Department of Business Innovations and Skills).

The key issues for the RoHS II Directive were the in-force date of 2 January 2013 with still many implementation concerns expressed regarding the revised definition of EEE (Electrical & Electronic Equipment) and the new equipment in scope.

The revision of the WEEE Directive has passed a key hurdle in December 2011 and is expected to be published in the summer 2012 with an in-force date anticipated to be January 2014. Key changes will be a transition to “open scopes”, such as “Other large”, “Other small” and”small ICT” defined by length, take-back requirements for retailers especially with respect to “small ICT” & revised targets for recycling transitioning to targets based on POTM (Placement On The Market) and WEEE Generated.
