HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY – ISO 14001:2015

2020 is a special year for those using or intending to use ISO 14001:2015.
It is the fifth anniversary of the publication of ISO 14001:2015.
So, what can we take from its 5th Birthday and what is its future…

Background
On 15 September 2015, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published ISO 14001:2015. So that makes today, 15 September 2020, its fifth Birthday.

It should be remembered, that there have been two earlier versions of ISO 14001.

The first edition was published on 15 September 1996, which itself was born out of the work by the British Standards Institution (BSI) in developing BS 7750 as a Specification for Environmental Management Systems. A second edition followed in 2004, which in turn, was replaced by ISO 14001:2015, which is the edition that we use today.

Based on the lifetimes of the two previous editions, which were eight and 11 years, respectively. I expect there is plenty of life left in ISO 14001:2015, especially as the 5-year Systematic Review is likely to approve ISO 14001:2015 as fit for use for another five years.

Current Benefits
A recent ISO Survey has shown that 312,580 accredited ISO 14001:2015 certificates have been issued worldwide in 179 countries making it the single most popular Environmental Management System.

With these numbers, ISO 14001:2015 has achieved a lot in its lifetime and is clearly a reason to celebrate its birthday.

More than the pure numbers, ISO 14001:2015 helps organisations better manage their environmental impacts & to help understand the further benefits of ISO 14001:2015, I have invited contributions from three experts:

Becky Toal FIEMA, CEO at Crowberry Consulting

Kirit Patel FIEMA, Environmental Manager

Christian Mielke P.E., Owner at E2M Environmental and Engineering Management

Thank you to Becky, Kirit and Christian for their contributions to this episode.

5th Birthday Celebration
So as we celebrate 5th Birthday of ISO 14001:2015 as well as the growing number of over three hundred and twelve thousand organisations, who continue to benefit from accredited ISO 14001:2015 certification & those that will join them in the years ahead.

No Birthday would be complete without a Birthday Cake.

So, lets light the candles

Play the “Happy Birthday” music. And blow the candles out for the start of another year of ISO 14001:2015 & wish it even greater success in its next year ahead.

I hope that this article has helped to advance your understanding of the fifth anniversary / Birthday of ISO 14001:2015, its past, its benefits and its future ahead.
