The Sands of Time run out of ISO 14001:2015 Transition

The Sands of Time run out of ISO 14001:2015 TransitionToday (15 September 2018) sees the end of the well-publicised 3-year long-transition period to move to ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 9001:2015 certification.

It is not a “hard deadline” after all as it has long been recognised from earlier articles (see How is the ISO 14001:2015 Transition going? & Has ISO 14001:2015 stalled?) that the take-up of the revised ISO 14001:2015 (and ISO 9001:2015) has not been successful.

As evidenced in the recent ISO Survey and illustrated in the chart below, there is a shortfall of 160,803 ISO 14001:2004 certificates belonging to organisations, which have not made the transition to ISO 14001:2015 as at 31 December 2017.

Chart: Progress towards ISO 14001:2015 Transition

That is means that, only, just over half of organisations (55.65%) have made the transition based on the number of certificates.

Any other organisations that previously held ISO 14001:2004 certification through an IAF MLA accredited certification body, that have not completed a transition audit will have their certification expiry at the end of today.

So today’s soft deadline of 15 September 2018 (for the completion of all transition audits and remaining validity of ISO 14001:2004 certificates) means that any organisation that have had a transition audit with nonconformities remaining open have until the “hard deadline” of 15 March 2019 to complete their transition to ISO 14001;2015.

ACTION POINTS

  1. Review your status for transition to ISO 14001:2015 with your certification body.
  2. If you have had a transition audit then any nonconformities will need to be closed by 15 March 2019.
If you have not had a transition audit, you may have to undergo a Stage 1 and Stage 2 Audit to the ISO 14001:2015 requirements.
  3. Make your transition and gain the benefits of environmental performance and compliance.
