Cyber attack on US Water Treatment Plant

The problems associated with cyber attacks have, often, been associated with a denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) as an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users with an associated extortion threat to translate the software attack into money.

A new attack vector for cyber attacks is to target a physical control, such as the water pump as part of the network of a water treatment facility in the US according to reports. The potential for damage in the water purification system and its associated 2,000+ customers could have had a significant effect on human health and the environment. The known vulnerabilities of phpMyAdmin used in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA) of the plant was the likely access point.
