The future of ISO 14001 is nearer than you may think.
This article is a sneak peek of the Behind the Scenes of a recent video released by BSI to help to promote the forthcoming publication of a revision of ISO 14001.
It all starts on my first time visit to the BSI Offices in Central London since they moved from their Chiswick Offices earlier in the year. So it was a voyage of discovery to take the lift to the eight floor.
At the Reception, I check in using the welcome tablet – I was ready to meet up with BSI colleagues to find out more about the video production process.
We had already gone through an initial exchange of Teams meetings, e-mails and script revisions for the video production. Indeed, it was my first in-person meeting with Emma Pye, who is the Chair of the BSI SES/1/1 Committee. It was great to catch-up on all things ISO 14001 and environmental management.
While we were catching up, bigger things were happening in the video production room. The room was being set-up with the cameras, lights, microphone and teleprompter to help us ensure that we remembered our presentations. The camera focus, lighting and audio levels were being tested ahead of us joining in the room.
Once it was our time, we each took it in turn to make our presentations. Mutually, we decided that I should go first. So I sat down in the chair with a little tense “stage freight” feeling coming over me.
The camera operator put me at my ease, whilst checking on the lighting, my audio level, even taking time to add some MAC cosmetic to take off a shiny patch on my forehead that I didn’t know I had.
Then, it was time for “Lights, Camera and Action” with a quick snap of the clapperboard…
I started confidentially, keeping to my memorise lines and a few checks with the teleprompter to ensure I was keeping to my presentation.
One or two times, I had to restart parts of my presentation, partly due to technical issues, such as a sound check, or because of the opportunity to improve my voice or intonation. Before too long, I had covered my part of the presentation for the overall video.
Time for Emma, she confidentially, took her place on the hot seat. Before long, the camera, lighting and audio, was set for her presentation. Again, “Lights, Camera, Action” and Emma was off for a confident presentation.
In total, we wrapped up our presentations well within our allocated time.
Over the coming days, the video would be edited with B Roll video added to add to the overall presentation and illustrate concepts like climate change and biodiversity & a check on the “first cut” made to make sure everything was ready for final publication.
Overall it was a great and positive experience especially to ensure that the message that ISO 14001 has been revised with a timeline for publication on or before March 2026.
If you ever get the opportunity to make a video, dive on in.
It is a great way to help to contribute your professionalism in environmental management and sustainability to a wider audience.
A special “Thank you” to all those involved in our ISO 14001 video at BSI. The final BSI video on the ISO 14001 revision can be viewed here.
